We are pleased to announce the construction retrofit to create Joey's Home, Mindful Hearts Memory Care Centre, Winnifred Stewart’s first Mindful Hearts memory care facility is expected to be complete in the fall of 2022!
As the need continues to grow for supportive dementia care for ageing adults with diverse abilities, we have big plans to convert our current Joey’s Home supportive and independent living residence into a memory care supportive living facility, to provide accommodations and Mindful Hearts programming for up to 17 ageing adults with disabilities.
Since the creation of our Mindful Hearts program in 2011, Winnifred Stewart has been working hard to create our first Mindful Hearts memory care supportive living facility.
A dream of over 10 years in the making, although not what we had originally planned, is finally coming to life, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our supporters!
The creation of Joey's Home Mindful Hearts Memory Care Centre will ensure people with diverse abilities who are living with dementia:
are able to live safely and comfortably, in a place that they can call home;
experience a physical and emotional environment that is calming and reflective of their needs;
that their fears and anxiety are successfully addressed and prevented through adaptive programming.
Since fundraising began in 2013, we have raised over $300,000 towards the Mindful Hearts building project, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
In 2015, our proposal for government funding for 38-bed building project was approved, however, due to the change in government that quickly followed, our Centre for Excellence was once again delayed.
As the need for memory care in the disability sector continues to grow, and our dedication to seeing this project become a reality remains, we are excited for our first Mindful Hearts Memory Care Centre to be complete.
Our current “Joey’s Home” was built in 2007, providing 8 supportive living spaces on the main level, 4 independent living apartments on the 2nd floor, and office space on the basement level.
To meet the growing need for specialized memory care, the retrofit project will replace the apartment suites and office area, creating a total of 17 spaces for people with diverse abilities who are experiencing dementia.

With the project expected to be complete in the fall of 2022, we continue to raise support to fund the cost of the construction, and for future Mindful Hearts Memory Care Centres to continue to meet the needs of our community.
