Gerard 04.05Assisted Living Homes

The Winnifred Stewart Association's Residential Services offers an assisted living option for people with developmental disabilities who are aging through the Winnifred Stewart House and Parker Stewart House.  These barrier-free homes are designed with numerous special features incorporated to meet the needs of individuals with a developmental disability and dementia-related effects.  The furnishings, appliances and interior design have all been selected and adapted to meet the needs of people with increased disorientation, reduced visibility and mobility.

What sets these unique homes apart from the other residences is their lifetime approach to health and safety through their environments, specialized staffing supports and personal care plans that focus on changing health needs.  Residents are provided with many opportunities to maintain relationships with their families and long-time friends, as well as continued access to the community.  Families are not limited by the policies and regulations found in a clinical setting, and are able to continue their support of the individual in a manner that is both convenient for them, but that is also in the best interests of the individual.

Individuals accessing this service:

  • are requiring increased supports and supervision to ensure health and safety
  • may be experiencing dementia due to aging or Alzheimer's disease
  • may no longer be involved in a community-based day program
  • may require increased medical supports (ie: tube feeding, in-home doctor visits)
  • require an accessible environment
  • desire a smoke-free and pet-free environment
  • have behaviourial/medical/mental health support needs requiring 24-hour, in-home supports

Staffing supports include, but are not limited to: assistance with personal care, cleaning, laundry, medical appointments, banking and financial management, community access, personal shopping, assisting with purchasing gifts and arranging visits with family and friends, and all aspects of community living required and desired by the resident.  Individuals are encouraged to make their own choices wherever possible and to maintain a level of activity that is supportive of continued health and wellbeing.
